John Madden’s Career
John Madden has been a professional football player, coach, and broadcaster for over four decades. He is best known as the head coach of the Oakland Raiders from 1978 to 1985 and then the Indianapolis Colts from 1986 to 2001.
Madden was born in 1940 in New York City. When he was young, his family moved to California and he played high school football there. After graduating from high school, he played college football at Oregon State before being drafted by the Chicago Bears in the first round of the 1962 NFL Draft.
He spent most of his playing career with the Bears, winning five division titles and two Super Bowls (1968 and 1971). After retiring as a player in 1975, Madden served as assistant coach with the Miami Dolphins and then became head coach of the Philadelphia Eagles in 1977. He led Philadelphia to an NFC Championship Game appearance in his first season but resigned after only one year due to health concerns.
Madden next served as head coach of the Oakland Raiders from 1978 to 1985. After leading them to their second Super Bowl victory against Houston Oilers in 1983, Raider owner Al Davis fired Madden after a 3-13 season in 1984. However, Davis hired him again two years later after another unsuccessful campaign and this time kept him until he retired after the 2001 season.
