The Outer Banks season potential release date is still up in the air, but things are starting to come together. With public hearings set for Monday and Tuesday of this week, all eyes will be on N.C. Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) to see whether or not a decision has been made on when the fishing season will start. Up until now, it has seemed like DENR is taking its time deliberating, but new information points to an earlier release date than previously thought.
According to WECT 6 Wilmington, DENR Spokesman Mike Hetrick is quoted as saying that the agency “has looked at the data and concluded that there will be enough beachfront closures throughout the region to accommodate anglers who want to participate in the fall fishery”. This news comes as a relief to many Outer Banks residents and business owners who have been urging DENR to make a decision sooner rather than later. The fishing season could begin as early as next week if DENR agrees with Hetrick’s assessment.
While Outer Banks residents are excited about the prospect of an early release date, some fishermen are worried about how it will affect their livelihoods. Hetrick says that if closures do occur, they will only last for two days at a time so as not to impact too many people at once. Anglers who have made reservations for trips during the restricted period should not worry yet; these reservations will still be honored even
